| Description: | PhD Studentship in Music Psychology (AHRC-funded) Centre for Music Performance Research, Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester Interactive performance for musicians with a hearing impairment A PhD studentship is available from 1 June 2010 for a candidate with qualifications in psychology and music to contribute to an interdisciplinary research project funded by the AHRC. The project is concerned with understanding, enabling and enhancing musical interaction between musicians with and without a hearing impairment. For solo performances, musicians with a hearing impairment can sometimes use the vibration of their own instrument, or the surface to which it is connected, to help them feel the sound that they create. The PhD student will conduct and report research 1) exploring the musical cues needed by hearing-impaired musicians to facilitate group performance and 2) testing the technological solution based on vibration signals designed by colleagues at the Acoustics Research Unit at the University of Liverpool, who hold the AHRC award. The value of the studentship will be the full-time tuition fee of £3390 and a maintenance grant of £13,290 (per annum: 2009-2010 figures). The successful candidate will be expected to complete their research by 31 May 2013 and submit their thesis by 30 June 2014.
